Doomscrolling Got You Down? Try a Dose of Good at Heart
Tired of doomscrolling the news?
Yeah, I know just how you feel - and yet, there it is . Every day. Heck, every hour. I’m a radio host/news anchor, so there’s no getting away from the news for me.
But still…
What’s wrong with a little, I don’t know, optimism-scrolling? Faith-in-people-scrolling? Joyreading?
I don’t know what to call it (obviously neither does Google - I tried), but I do know I want to share some stories that provide balance - how about people being kind, being of service, helping each other?
We want to stay informed and engaged, sure - but where are the stories that make us have faith in each other again?
So - enter Good at Heart: Conversations with People Who Quietly Make the World Better. Those people are all around!
I brought the idea to the radio station I work for (WSHU Public Radio), and they not only gave me their blessing, they gave me their partnership. It’s the best.
Every other Tuesday afternoon (because “maybe Tuesday will be my good news day”, thanks for the lyrics Ira Gershwin) a new episode drops, and each one, I hope, will warm your heart too.
During Good at Heart. I ask five questions to people quietly doing good in the world — and their answers might just restore your faith in humanity.
Real stories. Real heart. Quick conversations that remind you: goodness isn’t gone — it’s everywhere.
Here and on my Substack I’ll bring you behind the scenes and up to date, starting with Episode 1.
A month before the podcast premiere, I was walking into my local library and saw two high school girls who had set up a table outside to collect school supplies for kids in need. The Pulse Project. Founded and run my two High School Juniors. Who says the youth of today are unmotivated? Not me!
These lovely teens became guests on the premiere episode.
The final question I ask is always this: “Why do you think we are here on earth?”. I haven’t gotten the same answer twice, not yet. I’ll share the answers here and invite you to listen to the episode for the answers to the first four questions.
Randye: Last question, why do you think we're here on this earth?
Nola Somerville: I really do think that we're all here to make connections and to find other people and to help each other, and really just to find community and just connections and help and all of that, just that whole journey.
Giada Licursi: Yeah. Honestly, what Nola said is that we're here to care about other people. It wouldn't be human if there weren't more than one human we ought to care about everybody else.
You can hear the entire episode here, or wherever you get your podcasts. If you like it, please subscribe and spread the word - and thanks!
